Heat or Ice? This is one of the most common questions I get as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. It’s a basic question, but requires some understanding of physiology in order to make the right choice. In short, ice is best used to control swelling (most effective 1-3 days after an injury) while heat is used to loosen tight muscles/joints that are more chronic in nature.
